sound design
This page will show you how sound is going to be used in our trailer. We will firstly pick a few existing horror trailers which has inspired the sound for our trailer and explain why, then we will use screenshots of different software which were used to create different sounds for our trailer, with explanations of the process.
sound inspirations
These are a few existing horror movie trailers which are liken to the style of sound we would like for our trailer.
before i wake

I think that the sound in this trailer is very engaging, it draws in the audience because of the range of extreme dynamics. The equilibrium starts off with a gentle piano chord; similar to a lullably which is very soothing and then subtle drone sounds which creates slight tension and suspicion giving the audience an uneasy feel creating curiousity. When butterflies surround the parents and their deceased child appears the music is slow and melancholic making the audience feel sympathetic towards the current situation causing ease which creates more tension when the mood changes after a moment of silence when the child disappears and then a sustained drone is introduced; which marks the start of the disequilibrium. In this part of the trailer tension is built with moments of silence and a build up of sharp noises growing louder and louder until the end of the trailer, where the child's screaming and drones which are closer together in time create a climax.

Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension

During the equilibrium a repetitive tritone note is playing and the focus is on the dialogue with uses of white noise followed by piano chords once the people who were killed are shown to create a sympathetic mood engaging the audience to the storyline creating more tension when more moments of silence are used before the disequilibrium starts. In the disequilibrium percussive sounds are played followed by moments of silence and then quick sustained thud noises until the end of the trailer.

incidious
In the equilibrium the repetitive ticking sound adds to the tension and uneasy feel of the audience emphasising the feel of something uneasy about to happen even though the footage shows a relatively happy family, this sound puts emphasis on the natural sounds used on set which gives a more naturalistic feel, a moment of silence is used before the disequilibrium is introduced. During the disequilibrium thuds and a sound effects of wind type noises are used giving the impression of a supernatural spirit being present. As the trailer comes to an end repetitive sounds being used and then a build up of sounds on top of each other builds up climax especially with the moments of silence and then loud noise followed after.

the boy
|
In the equilibrium the piano chords are very melodic and soothing giving the audience a feel of comfort and ease giving the impression that everything is normal, as soon as the doll 'the boy' is introduced to the nanny a drone is used which changes the mood giving an uneasy feel. The song played after this point adds subtext to the trailer because it is one of the songs the boy listens to, this engages the audience and helps the audience to focus on what is going on.
As soon as you hear the child crying the disequilibrium is introduced, with a sudden backwards swish noise which builds up tension. As the disequilibrium builds up a repetitive bell sound is played with a swishing noise in the background up to the point of climax when they find out what really happened to the boy. Throughout the rest of this section thuds and drones are used to give an uneasy feel followed by moments of silence and nursery rhyme melodies which builds up more tension until the end of the trailer, where a creepy over voice is used and then a sudden thud is followed. |
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The equilibrium starts with an existing current song which follows the theme of young teenagers having fun, this gives an calm feel, until one of the characters say 'they're all dead', this marks the start of the disequilibrium and a light drone sound is used to imply this change in mood. When the disequilibrium begins a repetitive flicking noise is used with over voice of the characters which builds tension making the audience feel more anxious about what is going to happen next. The wind noise followed after the door bangs gives the feel of someone else being present in the background. At the ending of the trailer the use of panning of the over voice of one of the characters in a panic and then an orchestral section adds to the climax of the ending of the trailer.

A Nightmare on Elm Street
|
The sound in the beginning of this trailer is very natural and subtle focusing on the dialogue in the shot and the natural sounds of the props in the setting. A piano melody is then introduced marking the disequilibrium which is very subtle still helping the audience to focus on the dialogue used and the sounds of props used in the settings such as the scratching of Freddy's claws. Slight swish noises are used when Freddy is seen with a heart thumping noise to develop tension.
In the second part of the disequilibrium silence is used followed by a thuds with screams and over voice which again builds tension and adds climax towards the end of the trailer when the girl is being put to sleep and she screams. |
sound types
These files are some of the MP3 sounds which I used for the trailer, I was able to pick from a selection of sounds to pick the file which I liked the most and through was most suitable for the shot in the animatic. Below are some of the sounds that I used in my soundscape:
Thuds

Drones

animatic soundscape
The software that I used to create my sound was 'Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2015', this software makes it easy to view the storyboard animatic and match up the sounds with it. When I started using this software I found it quite difficult to get used to because I have never used it before, in order for me to get used to the software I had to play around with it by using different icons and importing different sounds and experimenting.
When I started to make the sound on 'Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2015' I had to storyboard animatic to follow with the sound from an existing trailer 'Smiley (2012)' to follow so that I could get an idea of how the sound builds up throughout a trailer.
I used the sound MP3 files of different horror sounds to find similar sounds to the existing trailer and import them into the software. I had to find the correct points in the storyboard animatic to drag them to, I started off with a 'thud' sound and I made sure that it started and ended through the right shots.
