how did you use media technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stage?
Throughout the entire project, we used and learned about many different technologies. We will discuss each technology used in each media product.
research/development
This stage is based on the work done over the summer and the early stages of our project. During the summer we was given the choice of choosing to create a Magazine, Poster and Trailer for our classwork. For the development stage we made a team profile where we introduced ourselves individually. Research was done on the horror genre as the genre for our final pieces is Horror (Slasher). We analysed several posters, magazines and trailers and presented our concepts for our final pieces.
Two members of NightOutInc chose to film a trailer. When filming the trailer we used an iPhone 5 as our camera. The iPhone 5 was released in September 2012 and consists of an 8 megapixel camera and a 1.2 megapixel front camera. Different iPhones have different amounts of internal storage which cannot be expanded. We used a 16BG iPhone which can store up to 240 minutes worth of video.
|
We used youtube as a tool to upload a various amounts of our project. During the summer we uploaded our trailers onto youtube making it public for anyone to view.
Also we used youtube as a tool to find inspiration from existing horror trailers. shakurs trailer

weebly
We created our logo using Photoshop, we thought that a crescent moon would work best as it relates to our group name 'Night Out Inc.'
|
The tools on the left side of the page helped create the style of our overall website. We chose a green and grey contrasting colour scheme for our page.
In order for us to create a Weebly account, we had to create a new email address for our group.
|
PICMONKEY
We created these edited images our of individual pictures for our team profile. This relates to our genre of horror.
|
This is a tutorial that shows how we edited our images and made them look the way they do. We found this simple to use as we watched tutorials and we had an idea of how we wanted our pictures to come out.

photoshop
Rochelle
|
Photoshop was a key software used throughout the entire project. During the Research and Development stage we used Photoshop to create our logo, summer poster and magazine.
Darnell
Darnell created the horror poster called Inner Perception.
Rochelle created a horror magazine called Nightmare. Both was made using Photoshop. Due to experience with Photoshop from the previous school year and the use of it in other classes, we found that creating a poster or magazine would work best for us. |
Google images
Google Images was a useful tool for us because used inspiration for our magazine/poster from existing ones. We found inspiration in many ways, for example the camera shots used for the main image, sizing and fonts of the masthead and font styles for conventions. We managed to keep our work authentic as we believe originality is key.
|
These are the technologies used for our Research/Development stage. We found this stage simple and straightforward and we used technologies to our advantage.
planning (PRE-PRODUCTION)
This stage of our project is based on the pre-production and production stage. In this section you will find the technologies used overall and specifically in our Audience Research, Print Design, Storyboard & Animatic and Moodboards & Artwork.
We used Netflix and other movie streaming sources to watch dozens of horror films. We did this because we found that watching horror movies, especially ones from different sub-genres would make it easier for our group to come to a conclusion about our final pieces. We found that we like Slasher films the most. We had access to Netflix through our laptops/computers phones and iPad's.
|
MOODBOARDS & ARTWORK
Different techniques were used for the moodboards, however a common technique that was used was a blending technique. This was done by using the rubber tool to soften the edges of the images.
|
We used Photoshop as a software for creating several moodboards. We used different techniques to make the moodboards different. Creating this allowed us to get a sense of the themes for our overall final products.
We used google to search for different images for our moodboards. Google is very useful as it is easy to use. As we had a plan of the images we will be using, we found that google was a quick and easy technology to use.
|
AUDIENCE & RESEARCH
We used SurveyMonkey to make a survey in order for us to find out how we are going to create and present our final pieces. From this survey we found out the fonts for our magazine and poster, a few shots for our trailer, the price of the magazine and the way our antagonist should look.
For our audience research stage we also used youtube as a way of gathering information for our final pieces. We done this by filming people answering questions on what they prefer for our final pieces. We also presented several trailers and asked them which shots would be good for our trailer. |
PRINT DESIGN
Pictures from the photography session
|
The Canon EOS 5D was used when taking pictures for the main images of our final pieces. This camera has a 12.8 megapixel resolution. We found this camera easy to use as some of us study photography. This means that we have had experience with using Canon cameras. |
|
These are the magazines and posters that were created on Photoshop. These are not our final pieces. We found it challenging to create these because we had a deadline to make however we are happy with the outcome of our work.
A Kino Flo was used to give our shots a good lighting. This was useful due to the background being black.
|
STORYBOARD & ANiMATIC
|
For our storyboard section we used our phone to take images that can be used to inspire the shots for our trailer.
We made a YouTube video based on how our trailer would look in an animatic style. This was done by gathering the images and putting them together in a chronological order and how we imagined our trailer to be at the time.
|
These are the technologies used for our planning stage. It was important that we used these to our advantage as we were planning towards our final pieces.
production
In this section of the evaluation we will be discussing the technologies used in the production stage, to be specific, the ones used in our Camera Work, Shooting Script & Location Reece, Costume & Make Up and Sound Design.
We used these two cameras to test multiple shots that we planned for our trailer.

camera work
|
We also used youtube slasher trailers to give us inspiration for our chosen location which was Kingswood House based in Dulwich. We were looking for an isolated, old fashioned location that resembles a mansion/big school.
|
Youtube was used to find a variety of trailers. We did this to discover different shots that can be used for our trailer. This was useful because it helped us during the camera work section of our coursework as we knew the key shots for our trailer.
|
shooting script & location reece
Photoshop was used to present our group (NightOutInc) and the group that we was filming with. We found it interesting and enjoyable to make these due to previous experience with this software.
|
Google Maps was a key technology when searching our location because we got a chance to view Kingswood House and other places in the area such as the restaurants for our lunch.
|
night out incorporation & house of terror
costume & make up
sound design
youtubeYoutube was used to gain inspiration for different sound styles for our trailer from existing horror trailers. Youtube is good source for finding inspiration due thousands of different creative trailers on youtube.
|
logic proThis was used to grab sound samples. These samples can be edited using many different techniques. Using Logic Pro was simple to use because a member of our group uses this technology for one of their other subjects.
|
premierWe took sound clips from the desktop and dragged them onto Premier. From here we edited the sounds. We found premier difficult to use as this was the first time we used it. |
dafont.com
As this is the work we did prior to our final pieces, we planned carefully how we wanted the last part of our project to be. We used technologies such as Photopshop, Premier, Logic Pro, Youtube, Canon Cameras, DaFont and Google Maps.
construction
In this section of the coursework, we will be discussing the technologies used in our final pieces. This is the most important part of our coursework so we used different technologies the best we possibly could. We will be discussing technologies used in our Magazine, Poster and Trailer.

The same camera was used this Photography session.
We took several images and we used some of them for our poster. We used a Canon camera to take these images. We found that dark background images with light towards to subjects face are the best images as they create a creepy vibe.
|
construction
We shot our trailer on the 18/11/15. Most of our shots were done on this day however we did not get the chance to get all of our shots. We shot a few scenes in college.

camera used
equipment used
We used a handful of equipment when filming our trailer. As we used this equipment for our Camera Work when we was testing the shots needed for our trailer, we had experience with the equipment. This saved us time.
premier
The overlay function was used to on our logo because we wanted to add texture to the production team logo as it would give the trailer more character as well as going with the theme of the trailer that we wanted. We imported the image off google images.
The dissolve tool was used near the end of the trailer. This created a transition from the Tracking shot of the corridor to the trailer title 'DR BARBITUS' This is effective because it dissolves slowly and the title follows our colour scheme. (Green)
In conclusion, we used many different technologies throughout our coursework. We learned how to use a few technologies and we improved with the other technologies. We used each one to their best of our abilities. We have more knowledge on media technologies and we applied it with our final products.
