camera settings
There are dozens of settings in Canon cameras that can improve whatever shot you are capturing, here are a few of them:
scene intelligent auto |
fliters |
This part in the settings inspects the scene your are in and chooses the right camera settings for the best possible shot you can get. This is useful, especially in darker locations.
|
The 600D camera has a variety of filters meaning that it can be applied before and after taking a picture. The names of the filters are Toy Camera, Miniature, Grainy Black & White and Fisheye.
|
flickering flash
This part of the setting allows the camera to release a pulse of flashes before and while taking pictures. This is useful when shooting in a dark location because it shows the subject clearly despite the darkness and gives off a creepy vibe which is effective in Horror.
FILM INSPIRATIONS
Here are 9 trailers of the films that inspired some of the shots for our trailer Dr Barbitus:
The ringMatch on action: When one of the characters put a dvd into the dvd player. I find this effective as it makes the characters non-verbal-communication (NVC) seem more intense.
Transition: This shot shows red leaves, then cuts to another shot of someone entering a dvd into a dvd player and then shows the transition of the well. I like this shot as it makes the trailer look aesthetically pleasing. Wide shot: The shot shows Rachel Keller and Ruth Embry standing behind one another and looking into the camera. This shot is effective as both characters facial expressions are shown giving off a dramatic effect. the devil insideClose up: This shot shows the camera close up to the stock characters face when Isabella is talking about her mother. This shot is effective as it shows the emotion and thoughts of the character through their reactions. Handheld: This shows the priests walking with Isabella. This shot is unsteady. This gives off the idea that they are in a rocky situation. The silence of the lambsQuick cut: This shows Hannibal Lecters face quickly two times. This shot is effective, especially in horror as the quickness of the shot may make the viewer jump.
Point of view: This shows one of the characters walking through the prison. This shot is effective as you get to see exactly what the character is seeing, also you get to see things from their perspective. Extreme close up: This shows Hannibal Lecters face as he is talking. This shot is effective as his blank facial expression supports the idea that he is an emotionless sociopath.
DISTURBIA
Tilting Shot: This shot shows Shia LaBeuof with an electric tag on his ankle. This shot is effective in horror because it adds dramatic tension.
Cross Cutting: This shot shows Sarah Roemore being recorded. This shot is effective because it shows the different things going on in that scene. Zoom: This shows rapid movement going on in the neighbours house. This shot is effective as it zooms into what the audience would consider gruesome. |
JessabelleOver the shoulder: This shows Jessie talking to a stock character saying that it is good to see him. This shot is effective as it shows clear NVC.
Quick Cuts: This trailer has many quick cuts in it. I believe this is very effective as it makes the trailer seem more intense. Canted: This shot shows Jessie and a stock character in a car accident. This shot is effective as it makes everything seem more destructive. the roomateHigh Angle: This shows Rebecca and Sara driving fast on the highway. This shot is effective as it looks natural causing everything to seem more realistic.
Panning: This shows Rebecca's mansion. This shot inspired NightOutInc's establishing shot CURSE OF CHUCKYLow Angle/Quick Cut: This shot shows Chucky pushing a stock character in a wheelchair.
Eye-Line Match: This shot shows someone opening a shower curtain. This shot is effective as it builds suspense. FRIDAY THE 13THHandheld/Reaction shot: This shows the reaction of one of the characters as she sees the antagonist. This is effective because the movement of the camera and the characters NVC puts the viewer on the edge of their seats.
Wide Shot: The shot of the moon is effective as it can set the dark mood of the trailer. the texas chainsaw massacre (2006)
Low Angle: This is a shot of a street post. This is effective as it can be represented as someone looking up at the post for directions.
Canted: This shows leatherface moving quickly. This shot is effective as you can clearly see it is leatherface for 1 second. Extreme low shot: This shows one of the stock characters running from the antagonist. This shot is effective because even though you can only see the shoes of the character, the shot still portrays terror. |

evaluation
During this stage of our project I learned how to use the cameras to film with help from the technician. As well as using the camera I learned how to use some key camera equipment for filming such as a tripod, tracking dolly, handheld rig and different lighting equipment. I found the camera work a little challenging as I did not know how to use a camera professionally. However I found using the camera equipment difficult as it was my first time doing so. Overall I have improved and learned much about cameras and filming.
